A performer who covers a leading role but does not otherwise appear in the show.
A standby is like an understudy with one difference: standbys are not in the show on a normal night. They wait backstage or nearby, ready to go on for a specific star role. Big, demanding leading roles often have a dedicated standby so the show never has to cancel a performance.
