A world premiere means nobody has ever seen this show staged before. Regional and small professional theaters produce many of them; several shows that later became famous on Broadway started as premieres at theaters in Chicago, Seattle, San Diego, Minneapolis or Washington. You may also see "regional premiere" (first time in the area) and "New York premiere".
